Manifesto

LA Arts Cooperative is a non-profit artist-run organization that allows Los Angeles artists to cooperate and promote themselves online. Its focus is its Web site la-arts.com, which is organized into sections for music, dance, theatre, visual arts, film and literature. Each section is run by a volunteer coordinator who is an artist in the field. The site features, for each field:

  • comprehensive listings of:
    • individuals and organizations involved in the field, with contact information
    • events
    • classes
    • venues used in the field
    • grants, competitions, presentation opportunities
  • reviews of events and art works by artists in the field
  • news

The site is set up as a membership-based database-driven Web application, which allows artists and art organizations to input and update information about their own contacts, events, activities and venues, and facilitates a decentralized, community-based editorial process.

LA Arts Cooperative also provides a variety of Internet-related services to LA arts organizations and individual artists:

  • Short (day or half-day) seminars on using Internet technologies, such as:
    • Web site design
    • Putting pictures and other images on Web sites
    • Audio and video for Web sites
  • Matching services to connect volunteer Web designers to organizations that need them
  • Low-cost Web hosting and list-management services for arts organizations
